Blocks kindly donated by a couple of Linus ladies and Kate from this blog (when I won one of her giveaways last year some time)
I've monkeyed around with them, adding borders and setting them on point with floral fabics..and loved every minute. I hope this quilt goes to a colour loving older girl, with a love of florals..
Also yesterday, I was inspired to make a bag for a forthcoming workshop that I am attending..and a brand new tea cloth caught my eye that I've been stashing and not using for quite a while now.
I can't go through the process and it was one bodge after another, but I like the finished result and when I find another towel , I'll take some pics of the process.

and these are vintage blocks that we plan to complete into a quilt worthy of raffling and fund raising

We have enough of the blocks above for about 3 king-size quilts!! We would love to know the story behind them - the fabric dates from mid seventies we think. Can you spot any familiar ones to you?? I'd love to know.

And finally I've been sewing some orphan blocks together that have either been donated to the Linus project or are from a wonderful giveaway , at least a year ago. It's almost complete tonight, I'll post again tomorrow. I've loved putting the jigsaw pieces together.

When looking through my stash of fabrics for the tea towel challenge over at 15 minutes of play blog I found that I had more than a little of vintage farics that had a 'tea' connection. Napkins, cloths, a tea dress! aprons...see above

I thought the the words " Brightest London is best reached by underground" on the original tea towel that would become the medallion ,were best seperated to reduce the amount of beige in the quilt. So I played with some background ideas.

after making some big 'made ' fabric I decided to slash them into strips rather than squares

and sandwich them within strips of seersucker...why not????

and then once again.
I haven't sewn the dog to the bottom of it...he can run off if he wishes!

These shapes reminded me of the escalator in the medallion tea towel image. Such fun!!

For cornerstones I used scraps left from the Kath Kidson cloth that had lovely images of Buckingham Palace, the London Eye and Big Ben and another scrap of the underground logo and just added fabric to make the right size. As you can see nothing is particularly measured, and certainly nothing square but immense fun and it holds lots of treasured fabrics. Definately a 'keeper' ...now to look for some backing. Its got to be an old tablecloth or a vintage sheet! Now...who's for a cuppa??

Another big THANK YOU to Victoria over at the 15 minutes of play blog for such a great challenge.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6267646951805661992.post-40177095695839450872013-01-08T05:07:00.001-08:002013-01-08T05:08:47.780-08:00First Quilt of 2013

Here's the making of a quilt that I have completed as part of a challenge on the Bumblebeans / 15 minutes Play blog (it's a great blog - please pop over and have a look - it's a lot of fun) Victoris sent the challenge fabric out (all the way from New York) to a dozen or more people like mysef in order to try and make something lovely out of it. Sort of like a silk purse from a sow's ear....but I happen to really like this sow's ear!!

I might add that quite a few of the fabrics were not quilting cotton, lots were polycotton, especially the shirting, and I think the final border too. I love using a mixture of fabrics and also I couldn't find my rotary cutter over Christmas so alot are scissor cut or...torn.

Here we go!! I loved the challenge fabric , so cut a big square from it, retaining the roses. I had 2 fat quarters of zingy Michael Miller fabrics that I've been waiting for the right moment for....here cometh the HOUR . I auditioned many fabrics and shapes but loved the idea of the roses being the centre of a star.

Next I cut up lots of stripey shirt pieces to 'make' some lights to form a star and used very dark striped black and green to form the points....OH NO!! TOO dark

So i softened the points with made fabric from the photo below....

I added tarten to the left-over scraps of the challenge fabric

Now that's more pleasing to the eye. And YES if the Quilt Police are watching...it is a Wonky Star...a very wonky star

Next I added the second of the Michael Miller fabrics as a border together with random squares inserted of the first one and added some fussy cut cornerstones edged in the tarten. You'll note I'm constantly trying to get a couple of my favourite fabrics of the moment in...but it wasn't to be

Lastly, a bit more chequered shirt 'upcycled' fabric - emphasising the points of the star, with a little whimsical change of colour in the bottom right corner - and a border of a red/blue cotton just waiting for a day like today.

I think that I'll put a scrappy light binding around it, with a hint of an inch of black here and there. But I've LOVED doing this ..THANK YOU Victoria, I love a challenge and this will make a great Linus Quilt for a little star child out there. Put together with love, with a 12" square from New York and pieced with the bonniest of scottish tarten!!

I thought I'd take a bit of time to reflect and share:
My camera doesn't do the colours justice ..they gel alot better in real life. As soon as I've started to sew and its possible to move it closer to natural light, you'll get a better idea. But I tell you what...I'm LOVIN it!!

Saturday morning saw a prompt start to a fabulous turnout of quilters and knitters to the Parish Room at Shipley (20 folk all-in-all, a record turnout).
Not only did these wonderful women arrive and immediately set to and make some inspiring quilts and blankets on the day, but many came laden with bags of items , completed since the last session. Some from themselves and some from absent friends, who couldn't make the date. One batch of tiny hats came from an elderly mother who knitted around 50 of these bonny coloured bonnets despite having one eye and a cataract - a 'life saver' her daughter described the goal of knitting for this much loved cause.

The word of our Shipley Linus sessions had spread to Cornwall, as a friend of one of our regular knitters pledged her support in the form of 2 beautiful neonatal blankets ..plus 2 more from a friend of hers...passing on the goodwill.

We sewed, chatted, knitted, shared ideas until we ate a well earned lunch of hearty Autumnal soup and crusty hot rolls...(thanks to the generosity of our funders UK Coal) and then continued into the afternoon. This saw the unveiling of our huge roll of wadding as quilts drew near completion (how on earth did Mary Ann get that whopper in her car and still manage to drive??"!!) her car has all the traits of Dr Who's tardis!!
At last the cogs are churning and the needles are flying..thanks to a lovely Project Linus sewing day with my dear friend and Linus partener in crime Mary Ann..I found the inspiration to start creating another quilt. This picture is particularly lousy but you get the gist. I LOVE the whole process, how snippets of inspiration hit you and you combine techniques and ideas to make something quite personal.
Firstly by thumbing through Material Obsessions (beautiful book - I do a link up later) I thought I would tackle a scrapbuster of a quilt. 4 blocks in and a whole day has passed and my will to carry on with the thought of another 20 blocks to conquer was waining. So in a 'quick fix' sort of a mood I trawled through my fabrics and came across about a metre square of a beautiful soft furnishing remnant/sample piece that I picked up at a charity shop and seemed perfect colourwise. Having made the borders to my 4 blocks, I started thinking about the GEEs Bend quilters and how they quilted with little or no mod cons - no rotary cutters for them..and started to rip big slices of two georgous remnants recently acquired (some £2 curtains with great big cabbagey flowers and another £1.99 remnant from local charity shop possible lightweight curtains) and I really enjoyed mixing the weights of the fabrics, it really didn't detract from 'the look'. I have echoed the four inner blocks with giant 10" outer blocks ..then bordered with some linen/ticking tablecloth that has been looking for the right home,
By Jimminy, I'm lovin it!! Its growing quickly and is forever open to twists and turns as the fabric takes me on its own journey. <strike>When I suss out the photography element of new Blogger, there will be more photos,</strike>
<strike>Bye for now. </strike>It took months but it's sussed now!!
This is one of my lovely boys during a weekend that some would say was a wild goose chase but I would maintain that it was a learning experience, and a gift of some time together to create memories of adventures of times when sometimes you have to just...jump in...give it your best shot...and keep your fingers crossed .Some you win and some you lose...and often what you win isn't what you'd hoped but nevertheless is a priceless unexpected gem gifted by the universe.
Oh how I wish I styled this photo a bit better!! This one in the foreground was an amazing quilt - made from men's shirts gathered from charity shops. bordered and backed with calico and hand tied with a brownish silk. Kath really made a fantastic job, it even has a pocket here and there salvaged from the shirts. Because its hand tied and not quilted by machine or hand, it has a lovely loftiness about it. A mCuhh9]Octor!!
These quilts were handed in, before we sxwpc|JRik)on - whick means that our little group must have sewn and knitted over 50 quilts, thanks to 2 sessions and alot of home-work. How brilliant!! and to say that some are first time quilters too -a fine bunch of wonderful women (and one small star of a boy!!) Now we start afresh and start to count again for 2012.....!!
This is my new love! I've always wanted to have a bash at Quilt as you go..and through one link or another I stumbled across this..here
Its not a tradional way, as you don't add the backing until last, therefore the back won't be technically quilted, just a bit of stichin in the ditchin! But it has meant that I can test out a few new stitches on my new machine and the quilt top will be lovely and quilted.
At the moment I'm not sure how big to go, I might stop at 9 squares, add a Q.A.Y.G. border and then hand tie with a button on each square and use as a throw...not sure yet...and I'm getting impatient!!
Thank you Victoria for encouraging me to complete this quilt in time for the 16th BOM quilt deadline - I've really enjoyed the whole process. I combined my Hybrid T- Rose BOM (x 2 plus a couple of mini ones)with some donated blocks for Project Linus to make a quilt for the project to be distributed locally in Derbyshire.
When I was wondering about how to put it all together you guys at 15 mins helped with tips and colour suggestions - so I added red and some navy - and its been a real joy to stitch as close up, these fabrics and colours are enough to make your heart sing!
I ended up putiing a little square of colour within the the 2 solid blocks because I thought they were a little plain. And if I remember rightly (golly this was only a week agao and I've forgot already!!??) I removed the orange paisley and the Kaffe stripes and instead popped in some other 'busy' fabric with a picture on rather than a pattern...and then I added a border of the Kaffe stripes that I love so much.
For quickness and ease I have backed with fleece for the last few smaller quilts...something that I never thought I would do but have been quite pleased with the results and when needs must....(and did I mention that Dunelm Mills have a half price sale on their fleeces....aha method in my madness....)
Happy New Year to you...rather belatedly but you'll see why!!
I'd had a nice tidy up in sewing corner (of our living room)
But one of my Christmas pressies (Thank you my lovely Mother-in-law xxx) was some money towards a machine that could free-motion sew . I'm embarrassed to say how many machines I have aquired since learning to quilt..in an attempt to machine quilt in a free motiony way, but ALAS none do.
This money led me to the listings of Ebay.....
et Voila!!
Lots of those decorating our rooms this year are relatively new as there are boxes STILL in the loft, mainly comprising of precious baubles laced with memories...baby first christmas, millinium baubles, ones with photos in of when the boys were tiny, gifts of ornate treasures that have come from the USA when my parents-in-law went. But they are in the loft still...due to the fact that they are so precious and mostly ROUND, you know spherical...like a ball and we have the most balloholic dog! One that will gladly launch himself into a tree having spotted something deliciously spherical.
So we have one token bauble, glass and green camouflaged high in the branches..candy walking sticks as both terriers are not too fussed at sweet stuff (thank heavens for small mercies!) mind you I have caught one chewing on a dry and baked orange slice that I had made to adorn the tree.
We have candles rather than lights on the tree and the large red one in the foreground is one that that Max made last year at his school Advent Fair.
I'm having so much fun machine quilting at the moment..its been like a EUREKA moment. I've had this industrial machine a whole year now, loved it and used it constantly but really struggled with quilting on it due to the power and speed...theres no walking foot here and you can't drop the feed dogs either. But I've practiced and practiced, slowed myself RIGHT down and increased my stitch length considerably. And I'm really happy with the results..I'm just stitching in the ditch, nothing fancy but its all coming together and if at first you don't succeed...TRY TRY TRY again.

I st myself the challenge of completing 4 quilts to give as Christmas pressies to 4 of 5 grandaughters...since then another (step) grandaughter has joined the family..so I've managed to up it to 5 (the remaining little one Madeleine received a quilt last year that I made with the help of 2 of her sisters) The picture above is of the last one being quilted... heres a few pics of the others dotted amongst other 'makings' of the year.
One did a stocking in readiness for Santa, a couple made table mats to place a candle or a plant on..and three made wall hangings with little pockets hidden within to contain advent treats or the like. As always, it was a lovely day, full of chatter and laughter... but at times quiet with concentration, getting lost in the moment, in a world of colourful merino wools.

Felting is a wonderful process, that brings creativity out in a person, sometimes quite by surprise. It never fails to inspire people and it gives them confidence and a well-earned pat on the back for achievement. It's a beautiful medium, that it seems almost all can enjoy, across all ages. AND a trifle addictive! so enter this soft and colourful world at your peril!!!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6267646951805661992.post-7484838678541370522011-11-24T06:27:00.000-08:002011-11-24T06:27:57.109-08:00The 'Hug' of a Quilt that warms your heart...Having spoken to my aunt last week, I came off the phone knowing that my quilt to her had to be sent sooner rather than later. She's having a tough old time, having fallen some 14 or more weeks ago - she's a bit down in the mouth, fed up with looking at the same 4 walls, and desperate to get out and about and back to normal. I live some hundred and fifty miles away and really wanted to cheer her up in some way. The quilt was supposed to be a Christmas pressie but sometimes needs must. So I parcelled it up and sent it on Monday. Well, the joy in her voice when she rang was wonderful - she knows that she's in my thoughts and that there is love stitched into every seam. I didn't realise until then, that a quilt really can GIVE that hug that you so want to share - and make someone feel that warm, fuzzy, loved feeling - knowing that someone has taken the time and the effort to show that they care. And we all need that at times don't we?Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6267646951805661992.post-46570172007179413542011-11-04T00:01:00.000-07:002011-11-04T00:01:09.466-07:00The Quilt that is making itself...Have you ever made a quilt, that appears to have a life, a will and an unfoldingness of its own? This is what I'm experiencing now,,,and enjoying every second,
I'm a collector, a hoarder, a magpie...my house is full of clutter and in a previous life I was probably some sort of furtler, come bag lady who rummaged through bins. Consequently, my fabric stash is enormous and I have unconsciously been storing materials since... I could.
Very recently, I have been reunited with my great aunt who I haven't seen for forty years. No excuses, no good reason for the unearthly amount of time that has lapsed but nevertheless I'm thrilled as I have fond memories of this lady and after all this time, this tiny fiesty lady has opened her heart to a part of her family that over the years has become a distant memory. As she has been quite poorly for a few weeks, I thought I could make a small quilt to cover and warm her lap and legs in the forthcoming winters. Well, fabrics have unearthed themselves as if by magic as I searched my stash and have come together as symbols of the passed decades that we have been estanged. I have made squares from 1970's pillow cases, '80's dresses and scraps from the last 20 years - not to mention some 1950's apron..It will be called 'the forty year quilt' and as it grows , and as I sew and think of my aunt, this quilt and its variety of fabrics makes my heart sing..
There is nothing quite like making something for someone in mind.
They had to contain blue and cream fabrics . I'm not big on cream, and have limited blues I suppose ..and I had made a promise to myself to just use stuff that I already have in my fabric stash. I have LOADS of fabrics but, each time I came to play the Lotto, I ended up having to buy even more...so now I am working within my limits and joining in when I can.
Anyway, as luck would have it, I remembered some vintage Laura Ashley cream coloured fabric that I have had dark-holed for a while, plus a few blue Laura Ashley scraps that were left from a hexagon project ET VOILA!!
This month's Block Lotto is a corker!! The theme is to use these colours in a sampler way - and create sampler blocks - so that the completed quilt will have a colour theme but a menage of all sorts of block patterns. I have chosen aliberated log cabin type theme. The top left was suppposed to be a blue rose type shape...but it lost its way a bit!! and is now a wonky window.
I would love to win this month!!!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
